About the Author
Ian Tregillis is the son of a bearded mountebank and a discredited tarot card reader. He was born and raised in Minnesota, where his parents had landed after fleeing the wrath of a Flemish prince. (The full story, he's told, involves a Dutch tramp steamer and a stolen horse.) Nowadays he lives in New Mexico, where he consorts with writers, scientists and other unsavoury types.

hope clakker science will transcend fantasy and reveal some basis in logic...

Keep the Clakker tales coming! Once again characters are crushed, broken, abused, and even dispatched in gleefully sadistic fashion. Plot turns are many, especially at the end, where you will wonder what could possibly come next. My wish after the first book was for the villains to receive the same carefully lavished horrific treatment as the heroes, and the author certainly came through. Now my wish is for at least some of the Clakker science to transcend fantasy and end up having some kind of solid or at least handwavium-based technical underpinning, though I fear this may never happen; while spirit and consciousness are well accepted as arising from something greater than the sum of their parts, nothing in nature as we know it approaches the perpetual motion energy source that seems to everlastingly power the golden hordes of our mechanical friends.

The best treatment I've read all year of AI, free will, and the dual poles of empathy and the seduction of power. This is sci-fi in the guise of fantasy and alternative historical fiction. The writing is excellent and the plot gripping. I liked The Rising even better than The Mechanical, and I wait eagerly for the series final installment. Great job, Ian Tregellis!

Brilliant Follow-up to "The Mechanical"

Ian Tregillis is in danger of becoming one of my favorite writers; he's so adept at mixing gorgeous prose with foul-mouthed hilarity. This action-packed novel delivers on all the promise of the series opener while going farther afield - both geographically and existentially.

Pravda (which means "truth") is a satire written at the height of Thatcherism when huge political changes were afoot. The play essentially studies, through black humour and close scrutiny, the tabloid ethic and the media industry as a get-rich-quick-fix.

In the programme for the original 1985 production of Pravda, Brenton wrote: "Pravda means 'the truth'. English newspapers aren't propaganda sheets. The question is, why do so many of them choose to behave as if they are?"

The character of Lambert Le Roux is a South African newspaper tycoon and the owner of several companies, striding his way through the regional papers en route to Fleet Street. Turning broadsheets tabloid, dumbing down the message, and stretching the truth, Le Roux takes no prisoners as he manipulates politicians and creates a media monopoly out of a once-respected industry.

Le Roux is bent on dominating England's press as he has elsewhere in the world. As we see Le Roux accomplish his aims, we see also how the press is not the organ of truth we like to think it is. The dissemination of the truth is no longer its primary goal under the 'Lambert Le Rouxs' of our world. What is important now is what sells.

The play is an epic satire on the media in the Thatcher era; a morality tale about how Andrew, a young liberal journalist, finally succumbs to Le Roux, who makes him editor of a tabloid; and - allegedly - the play is a direct representation of Rupert Murdoch who, even in 1985, was a major force in media ownership.

Howard Brenton's and David Hare's first collaboration since Brassneck in 1973, Pravda was premiered at the National Theatre in May 1985, starring Anthony Hopkins and directed by David Hare, and was awarded the London Standard Best Play Award, the City Limits Best Play Award, and the Plays and Players Best Play Award.

This Modern Classics edition features an introduction by Philip Roberts, Emeritus Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds, and a foreword by Jonathan Church.

About the Author

Howard Brenton is a British dramatist, noted for his controversial political plays of the 1970s and 80s. He became resident dramatist at the Royal Court in 1972, following on from David Hare. His plays include Revenge, Brassneck (a colloboration with David Hare), The Churchill Play, Epsom Downs, The Romans in Britain, Pravda (also a collaboration with Hare), Berlin Bertie, Paul, Never So Good, and In Extremis. He also wrote the TV programme Spooks and has translated many plays into English. In 2011 he won a Theatregoers' Choice Award for Best Play for Anne Boleyn.

Sir David Hare is a British playwright and director, noted for his critical examination of post-war British society. In 1968 he became a founder of the travelling fringe company, Portable Theatre, which performed some of his early plays. The following year he became resident playwright at the Royal Court Theatre, before being made resident playwright at the Nottingham Theatre in 1973. In 1974 he co-founded the Joint Stock Company. His plays include Slag, Brassneck, Fanshen, Pravda, Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, Amy's View, Via Dolorosa, The Permanent Way, Stuff Happens, The Vertical Hour, The Power of Yes, Berlin and Wall. He was knighted in 1998.

A cynical view of the world of modern journalism

Although littered with 80's references which may trip up the reader at first, Pravda is the tale of an honest journalist who see's his profession debased through the growth of tabloids, the sensational shocking headlines and the British public's lust for sex, royalty and nationalism. Into this arena walks La Roux, cunning, devious and calculating, a very thinly veiled Murdoch his personality turns everyone towards him, controlling the worlds of royalty, sports, politics and at the end the world of journalism, forcing even the "hero" of the book to give up his honest journalistic instincts and start calling for smut.

Another FANTASTIC BLUESY ALBUM

If your a Voodoo Chile Fan you must buy this album, songs like Bleeding Heart, Lullaby For Summer, Jimi sets these songs on Fire! Mitch Mitchell as always does some fantastic drumming, its very sad we lost him as well not to long ago the last of The Jimi Hendrix Experience the original line up. I know thier up in Rock N Roll Heaven Jamming with Jimi and Noel RIP.

Spot on! I think that this album is the last decent studio product involving ANY properly unpublished and released Hendrix material that we will get from "Experience Hendrix." So this tab book is great for us lazy guitarists who don't want to fool with doing it on our own (it being transcribing).

Even though it's a short book, they still manage to get in the important parts of the story:<br /><br />*angel visits Mary<br />*trip to Bethlehem<br />*no room at the inn<br />*Jesus born in a stable, laid in a manger<br />*angels visit shepherds<br />*Shepherds visit the stable<br />*wise men bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh<br /><br />I was very encouraged that the final page of the book shows the wise men presenting gifts to a toddler-sized Jesus rather than a baby in a manger. That's a detail normally missed in most children's Christmas books. Hats off to Juliet David for her willingness to appropriately stray from tradition.<br /><br />The book measures 5 by 5 inches, so it's slightly larger than traditional board books. I'm a Yii developer with 5+ years of experience.<br /><br />I have read this book thoroughly and I must admit that this is an outstanding piece of work. It targets a little bit more experienced Yii2 developers and thus does not focus on complete basics. Instead, it provides detailed information on most important topics, that covers application development.<br /><br />Book consists of thirteen chapters and nearly 350 pages. These pages are full of important details, tips, tricks and a large number of useful examples.<br /><br />Chapters are ordered from configuration, through key application development, to additional tasks around application life-cycle.<br /><br />It includes:<br /><br />- introductory topics (composer configuration and console commands or applications),<br />- basic application development (DAO, queries, data providers, AR, modules, widgets, assets and helpers),<br />- request life-cycle (authentication, authorization, routing, responses and events),<br />- advanced topics (RESTful applications, translation and internationalization),<br />- application life-cycle (testing, debugging, fixing performance and security).<br /><br />Every aspect is discussed in details, supported by many examples and useful tips. Chapters are written in the way, that both beginners and advanced developers can benefit from them.<br /><br />I can strongly advice anyone, who is around Yii2 development, to purchase this book. Covered material is vast and written in a very well form. It (the framework) competes with Symfony and Laravel, also two of my favourites. In this book all relevant topics are covered, also the tricky ones like "authenticating and authorizing users" and "database handling with DAO" and REST, another hype out there. Also the real world is there with debugging, performance and security. Stevens Distinguished Professor of Economics and Economics Department Chair at Trinity University. Previously, he was Director of the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and the Rod and Hope Brim Eminent Scholar of Economics at Florida State University, where he received two university-wide awards for teaching excellence. His teaching areas include principles of microeconomics, money and banking, econometrics, and labor economics. Dr. Macpherson is an applied economist whose research focuses on real estate, pensions, discrimination, industry deregulation, labor unions, and the minimum wage.
