Esta segunda novela del escritor emergente David Camacho le sigue, en calidad, a su primera obra "Los Zapatos Blancos". Es una novela llena de suspenso, de diferentes puntos de vista acerca de los caminos que uno elige en la vida, de personajes que sorprenden, alegran y - en algunos momentos - hasta hacen enojar. Es, además y no menos, un libro de viajes en tren a través de Rusia. Después de haber leído el libro, uno tiene la sensación de haber estado por esos parajes y haber vivido esas experiencias. Recomiendo esta obra, así como recomiendo a su obra anterior. Desde ya me alegro mucho por su tercer libro, que espero no se demore demasiado en ser creado!

A Book for Our Times

In Carl Grip’s Reclaim – The Septemist Manifesto, he sets forth a series of steps that could be taken to reduce our dependency on oil while realigning the social inequities that have caused the greatest gaps between the rich and poor known to date. These inequities have transferred power over the planet to a few socially powerful individuals while the rest of us have been relegated to the role of spectators. This is a thoughtfully prepared treatise on how we might move forward from a global perspective and then successfully navigate our way through the challenges that will face us in this century and beyond. It’s accomplished by allowing every human being equal access to the decision making process and thus creating a true global democracy. This is an important work considering the global catastrophes looming on the horizon and should be taken as a call to arms by all of us.

The Septemist manifesto is like nothing I have ever read before

The Septemist manifesto is like nothing I have ever read before. It presents interesting ideas of how humanity together would be ably to save the planet and hence also mankind from perdition. I write would, not will. A previous reviewer brings upp feasibility as this manifestos Achilles heal. I thought about that as well meanwhile reading. Is this really feasible? I asked myself. I honestly really don’t know. However, the catch is that I, when I’d finished reading, couldn’t come up with a single argument that would disaffirm the ideas that are presented in the manifesto. I have now thought about it for some time and I still can’t come up with any argument that would say that this could not happen. It could happen. The question now is if it will.

I would recommend you to read this manifesto because we need some grand change to stop us from traveling further down this road to perdition. This manifesto presents such grand changes.

Global Malaise: Solved

A fascinating philosophical discourse on the reorganization of the prime movers driving humanity heedlessly toward one cliff after the next (politics, energy, economics), whose gyrations are felt globally.

The obvious solution here would be a return to isolation and independent growth. At the least, this would limit the damage we cause one another, but at the expense of the knowledge we've gained. The Crusades were a terrible series of events, but one cannot doubt the technological, scientific, and cultural benefits gained (apart from another reason for paranoia) from the interaction of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle East. So isolation isn't the best solution.

The author, who goes by the nom de plume, Carl Grip, provides a glimpse at how reorganizing these components as dictated by Septimism would improve the world for everyone. Specifically:

"Implementation of essential Septimist ideas would not only be feasible, but also economically, socially and environmentally profitable."

I have little doubt about this paragraph apart from one niggling point: feasibility. It isn't that humanity could not make the changes as proposed, only that it would not. Humanity is scarcely united on anything, change is certainly not one of them, except that the majority of folk don't like it, even when it's to their disadvantage to maintain the status quo. That's the hump in any social engineering project--most have no issue with the how things are, particularly those who have been successful within it. Lately those who are successful within a system have become very good at convincing less successful people that things are just as they should be. More cynically, the ongoing attitude seems to indicate those above are threatened by the upward mobility of those below, that it is undeserved in large quantities, that it must be earned in ways that most in the upper echelons never need to undergo.

Some will appreciate the aspects Grip identifies as problems, and will also appreciate the proposals to help stabilize the wobbly top that is humanity. On the other hand, others will not see these aspects as problems, and for that reason his entire thesis will be dismissed, which is unfortunate. The entire manifesto has a decidedly liberal bent, so it concerns itself with the welfare of all humanity, and the responsibility of all humanity to make an effort for equality of opportunity, while at the same time attempting to produce a utopian society that won't really diminish the wealth and status of those who have not achieved that status through exploitation of the existing system (or, rather, interwoven systems).

In all, Grip's Reclaim is a fascinating and articulate mental exercise that I will undoubtedly return to on occasion. Grip has made several interesting proposals that are no less likely to come to pass than were feudalism and capitalism. They simply require the right impetus for change. Whether we will see it in our lifetimes, or ever, is impossible to predict. But at least the idea is there.

About the Author

Dr. John Bernthal is Professor Emeritus of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln.  He has been a speech-language pathologist for over 40 years including employment in the public school, at several universities, and professor and Department Chair for over 30 years. He conducted research, taught and published in the area of speech sounds disorders. He is a past president of the American Speech Language Hearing Association, an ASHA fellow, and recipient of Honors of the Association.

 

Dr. Nicholas Bankson is a Professor Emeritus of Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University. He has had a 40-year career as a speech-language pathologist, including employment in the public schools, serving as the state supervisor of school programs in Kansas, plus 27 years as a department chair in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Boston University and James Madison University. His scholarly efforts have focused on speech sound disorders and assessment of language disorders in children. He is an ASHA Fellow, and is the recipient of the Honors of ASHA.

 

Dr. Peter Flipsen Jr. is a Professor of Speech-Language Pathology at Pacific University. He has more than 20 years of experience in the field as a clinician, teacher, and researcher. He teaches courses in phonetics and speech sound disorders in children and has published more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles in the field. His research has focused on classification of speech sound disorders, measurement of intelligibility of speech, and speech and language development in children with cochlear implants.

Not an Introductory Guide

There is no doubt that the authors of this text are indeed experts. All concepts have an angular approach and base nearly each written conceptual description with its source, scholarly journal, theorist/investigator or experimental finding.

Sentences are overloaded with information-- there are no fillers and no glaze-over sentences. Any simplistic language that is easily processed in any text for a reader's occassional "breath" are instead substituted with the most technical or clinical term, followed by an overwhelming complexity of language that requires every ounce of concentration and comprehension exercisable. I believe EACH sentence was written with the purpose of leaving someone in complete jaw-dropping awe.

Students opening this book will most likely have encountered the foundational framework for many of the concepts presented and may find just the right amount of challenge and stimulus needed to reactivate their knowledge or expand on it with it's lengthy, thorough, and small-print font. However, I HIGHLY discourage anyone seeking an "introductory guide" or "overview" of articulatory and phonological disorders to begin their studies here. Authors have clearly written this book for the "continuing" student, not the "new" one. Even the introductory chapter is written with the assumption that you have a background in linguistics and/or phonetics. That being said-- this book, I imagine, was intended for 4th-year or graduate level study.

VERY TECHNICAL/DIFFICULT/WORDY

I bought this book solely for an Articulation and Phonological disorders class I'm taking. This is my first semester in grad school, and I have my B.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. I find this book EXTREMELY difficult to understand and it takes me HOURS to comprehend 10 pages at a time. It's clear that the authors are very knowledgeable but I feel like this book is entirely too technical for the likes of an introductory Artic course. I have to constantly look things up online to get a clearer understanding of what the authors were trying to convey in their complex and wordy sentences. After reading a more sensible description from another source online, I often ask myself "Well, why didn't they just say that in the first place?". For anyone who is required to read this text... good luck.

About the Author
David Croteau has a degree at the Brandeis University with a PHD in Sociology from Boston College. He taught Sociology in general at Boston College, Clark University, University of Mary Washington, is associate professor at Virginia Commenwealth University. Taught theories, methods, layers, movements and media. He published Politics and the class divide finalist award Transformational Politics Book Award, sponsored by American Political Science Association.

William Hoynes has a degree in history and political science at Tufts University with PhD in Sociology at Boston College. He is a Professor in Sociology and taught theories, methods, layers, movements and media. During his 20 years of teaching at Vassar College he was the director of the Department of Sociology and Media Studies Program and the American Culture Program. He wrote Public television for sales: media, the market, and the public sphere awarded to  Harvard University's John Kennedy School of Governement.
