Great book

I am a newcomer to Singapore, and this book was recommended to me by a friend. I owe that person my gratitude, because this book has changed my life. I was a shy and introverted fellow who had trouble with women and girls, but all that will be changing soon thanks to my new location and the insights gained by the book. I purchased this book in Singapore, a tiny city-state with a society that is more western compared to equally prosperous neighbors to the north. The book takes a humorous look at a group of ethnic Chinese Singaporean women who stake out joints catering to white expatriate men. The book illustrates one of the bad side effects that a once traditional nation going through dramatic westernization in a short period had to suffer.

Thus, in an analysis of data on Montreal school children, it teases apart four distinct trajectories of physical aggression over the ages 6 to 15, examines predictors of these trajectories, and identifies events that may alter the trajectories.

Aimed at consumers of statistical methodology, including social scientists, criminologists, psychologists, and medical researchers, the book presents the statistical theory underlying the method with a mixture of intuition and technical development.

Clearly written and great methodology

I really like this book and the new traj program in Stata. The chapters are clearly outlined and explained in English for those of us who do not learn using equations. Highly recommended.

Excellent reference

Nagin's writing is clear and intuitive. The techniques he's describing are all fairly sophisticated and he presents their interpretation, rationale, and limitations in a way that most practicing sociologists and psychologists would be able to understand.

The only thing I wish he spent a little more time doing was to explain the circumstances where group based trajectory modeling is superior to growth mixture modeling. They are very similar techniques and at the moment growth mixture modeling has more developed diagnostic tools. At times, then, I wonder why I wouldn't use growth mixture modeling instead of GBTM. Nagin does not do a very good job of arguing for when the technique in this book is superior or desirable relative to that one.

Timeless Helper

I purchased this book in 1970 when I was an apprentice carpenter. I looked at it and set it aside not appreciating the invaluable help it is. Now after many years I started my own general contracting business and this book never leaves my side. From rafter tables or the weight of brick to safe loads on wood beams. There is so much packed in this excellent guide you won't believe it and you don't have to be a PHD to understand the formulas. They even tell you were to use them. I am so glad it is still available because mine is falling apart from use. I guess I should not be surprised that a timeless book like this would still be in print. Buy it ! Even if you are not in the building trades, use it to fix your castle.

Outdated and Disappointed

This pocket sized book has too many irralavent things in it. Who cares about a census in 1970 (the last one entered). For someone who wants to learn how to use a framing square, this in not the referrence. Thare are very few illustrations. And remember, "a picture is worth a thousands words!" One would be better of buying a square at a building center. They usually come with a small "How To" guide.
