Buy this book!

This book is fantastic! It is probably written primarily with beginning and intermediate French speakers in mind, but advanced French speakers can also "upgrade" the techniques they use to learn the language. There are many techniques described in the book on how to learn French efficiently and in a fun way. There is also a lot about motivation and self-confidence--I found this most helpful.

I am an an advanced French speaker, and I still found this book indispensable.

Not worthwhile

This is a short book that teaches you almost nothing about French. Instead, it tries to provide some tips for language learning, but I found them to be either common sense (e.g., spend time each day) or not very helpful. The author does not give clear guidelines for how to learn, but instead just suggests choosing among all the usual options (Assimil, Duolingo, etc). The author is a native French speaker who has learned English, but doesn't have any experience learning French. There are lots of free language learning blogs on the web that provide better advice, along with comments by other users that can be very informative, so a simple web search will give you better results.

Excellent and Informative

I've been trying to learn how to speak French for about 15 years now. And although I have learnt a language in the past (English is not my native tongue), I had never managed to make it 'click' with other languages. For the longest time there was a glass ceiling that I kept hitting with my learning, and I didn't understand it. Every time I reached that point, I'd become discouraged until the next time I 'decided to learn French' only to find myself in the same rut a few weeks later. Although the initial purpose of this book is obviously not to point out your mistakes, but rather offer new alternatives, it has definitely helped me reevaluate my approach towards learning and turn my shortcomings into the strategies that will make it possible to truly improve my learning - not only French but any other language and even other job skills.

In this attempt, I am past that rut and I am not fluent yet, but this time I'm positive I will be. Very worth reading.

Russians understand the vanity of life as Solomon did.

There is an episode of "The Sopranos" where Tony is on the sofa drinking vodka with the one legged beautiful girl named Svetlana. He tells her how much he admires her courage and outlook on life, because even though she has suffered a cruel amputation she remains not only physically attractive but cheerful. She then says to him "That's the trouble with you Americans. You always expect things to be good, and when they are not good, you are disappointed and miserable. We Russians never expect anything to turn out good. That way we are never disappointed, and if per chance something turns out good-well, that is an unexpected benefit." Until you understand this simple Russian outlook on life, you will never appreciate the Russian style of literature. Unlike American writers who always have a fantasy "happily ever after" ending, the Russian knows and is not afraid to admit that often life stinks and then you die. Russian literature is not for escape from reality, but rather confronting reality. Reading these short stories, and other Russian literature from the large volume "War And Peace", "Anna Karinina", "Doctor Zhivago" etc. to the vast volumes of poetry, to these delightful short stories gives us an intricate look into the minds of the Russian people. They have, perhaps more successfully than any other people group in the world, managed to deal with life's struggles as though they are expected, rather than unplanned. I suppose that's why they could lose 20 million people in WW2, and defeat the Nazi war machine while the citizens lived on bread made from sawdust and human flesh that froze to death during the sieges of Leningrad, and Stalingrad. These stories will give the average American an idea as to why the Russians do not cringe when the USA becomes threatening as other nations do. These people are tough and not only do they not fear hardship-they expect it!

Terrible production quality

The stories are wonderful, but the production of the book quality is extremely poor, as though it were photocopied. Barely any typesetting at all, no table of contents, stories run together so tightly you have to hunt to find them, the text is so small you need a magnifying glass. I would not purchase from this seller again.

The font used for this book is as small as I have ever seen a book printed. A large black-box warning should have accompanied this offering. Without a magnifying glass, the book is un-readable. BTW, I have very good vision but will not chance losing it by squinting at this script.

I grew up in a home where I was taught to be modest so taking any risks in the bedroom has been hard for me. But this book answered lots of questions I had that I didn't dare ask anyone else--even my husband. Dr. Leman made me appreciate who I am--and encouraged me to be the woman I want to be, free of embarrassment. If you're like me, and you want straight talk about marital sex, what your spouse wants, how often you should "do it," some creative suggestions for what to do when you're "too pooped to whoop," and some guilt-free advice that will help you see yourself (yup, love handles and all) and your spouse in a whole new light, this is the book for you. No more boring in our bedroom now, that's for sure! And I'm REALLY liking it.

A Book Even Your Husband Will Read...really!

After reading Have A New Kid by Friday Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child's Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days and seeing how much the relationship between me and my daughter became better, I decided to check out other books by Dr. Leman and I stumbled across his Turn Up the Heat in hopes that I could improve aspects of my marriage as well as I have with my daughter. WOW!!! What a tremendous difference in our sex life. Quite frankly, I didn't think it could improve that much and my husband? I think he's going to become a "Leman groupie"! I never thought I'd see the day that my husband would read a book about relationships!! I asked him why he'd read this one, and he said that he liked the candor and guilt-free style and encouraging advice that Dr. Leman has. This book handles intimate topics with Dr. Leman's same degree of readability and humor as his other books. It is an easy read and yet full of impacting advice. I would highly recommend this book. My husband and I are a path that I didn't think was possible and we thank Dr. Leman for helping us get there. We're going to check out his Sheet Music next!!

Great Book for Married Couples

Turn Up the Heat: A Couples Guide to Sexual Intimacy

Kevin Leman has another winner here. I have not read his book Sheet Music, which is also about married sex, but Turn Up The Heat is great. He answers questions in a non-threatening manner, so if you buy this you can have a great talk about sex, and then turn up the heat. Kevin Leman talks and writes in a very matter-of-fact manner that makes the reader comfortable about the subject, whether it's sex, birth order, intimacy, conflict, raising children, etc.

People who read his books usually comment about laughing or chuckling because he can make very taboo or uncomfortable topics SIMPLE and EASY to discuss and to put into action.

He is a Christian, but this book is not to convert people to Christianity.

I highly recommend this book. If you were raised to believe that "we don't talk about those things...sex, money, death", this book is definitely for you. In fact, it's worth getting the one day shipping!

Excellent Read

Wonderful story!! A hero who falls in love with a young girl's enthusiasm and vitality and waits to have her until she comes of age! The hero was "heroic," but the heroine was such a wonderfully strong and vibrant character. I hate it when the heroine is a simpering miss who waits around for the hero to rescue her. It was very refreshing to see her take matters into her own hands. I kept imagining women from countries like Iraq or Iran might be going through similar plights -- strong women fighting to change the way they are treated in those countries. The heroine was very inspiring and the hero was heroic because he was willing to forgo long standing traditions of his kinsmen's treatment of their women. The storyline was great, the romance was great! A definite keeper!

No cheese here!

This is the most intelligent and non-cheesy Sheik romance that you're ever likely to find. Set around 1800, it's the story of Princess Tess of a fictional Balkan country who marries Galen Sheik of a desert tribe. The marriage takes place pretty early in the book, so this may count as a marriage-of-convenience plot if that's your thing (or not). Tess is no unwilling victim - she's given the chance to exert some control over her life and future and she goes for it. Galen has his own schemes but finds himself falling for his wife.

The wonderful hero and heroine set this romance apart from many others. Galen is hot-tempered and just plain hot. He feels his "barbaric" blood keenly and controls himself rigidly. You get the impression of a volcano trying to keep itself from exploding. Alpha and sexy, he's also very protective towards Tess. He finds he desires her a lot more than he thought he would. He waits though until she's ready for the marital bed and (great hero!) doesn't even look at another woman in the meantime.

Tess is a strong and vibrant young woman, overflowing with vitality and enthusiasm but never dumb. A virgin but thankfully no prude or shrinking violet in the bedchamber. She shows her bravery and quick wits when the villain abducts Galen's sister. She actually has a sound plan and her playacting is delicious. Of course the hero still saves her in the nick of time. This is a romance after all :-)

The sexual tension is very strong leading up to the consummation. Actual sex scenes are rather few and not particularly graphic after the first. The story was so engrossing though, I really didn't miss them much. What I liked best was that the hero and heroine were actually heroic. They both rise above their times, and in the hero's case his inner "barbarian". Galen has a purpose - to unite the warring tribes into 1 law-abiding country. Tess aims to improve the lot of women in the new country. Galen refuses to whip her when she goes too far and he's expected to punish her. He finds another way to make her scream ;-) Ah we should all be "punished" so!

This is a well-written romance with likeable, strong-willed, and heroic characters. For those who have read Johansen's other books set in Sedikhan, this is the story of Galen Ben Rashid and Tess Rubinoff - who start off the dynasty. The novel transports you in time and place.

A wealth of information

Liz Greene is exceptional in the field of astrology and what creates a personality, She has written many books that are powerhouses of reading material. The following is just an example of her valued insight into different human personalities and elements. Quite revelational in her approach and so easy to comprehend. I recommend this book!

The permutations of human blindness are many and various, and divorcing or separating parents - or even those who remain living together but are emotionally alienated - will generally demand that the child choose one or the other. The love for the other parent must be denied, suppressed, silenced. This is terribly human. If we are hurt by someone, we find it hard to bear if someone else we love shows affection to the person who has hurt us. If there are oppositions between the 4th and the 10th in the child's chart, then the child's own inner division colludes with the parents' division. I have seen many, many examples over the years where the person has had to deny great love for a parent in such circumstances. The denial may be believed even by the person himself or herself. When we see Venus, Moon, Neptune, Sun, or Jupiter in a parental house, we know that there is a powerful positive bond with the parent, even if the relationship has also been very difficult. If any of these planets are in the 4th, they are likely to describe strongly positive and even idealised feelings for the father. But if there has been a break-up and the father has gone off - or if there are oppositions from planets in the 10th, even if he hasn't gone off - it may prove impossible for the person to keep such feelings in consciousness. The ambivalence may be too painful, and the sense of disloyalty to the mother may be too great to bear. Perhaps the father has left because of another relationship. Perhaps he marries again, and has other children. Then the problem is compounded, because the child's own jealousy allies with the jealousy of the mother and makes it quite impossible for the emotional bond with the father to be recognised. The relationship is destroyed, and the child, who is now grown up, says, "Oh, I haven't seen my father much since the divorce. I have very little to do with him. I see him occasionally, but we don't have much of a relationship." All the positive, loving feelings have been pushed underground, because we do not cope well with divided loyalties. We suppress them because we have to survive psychologically; and we have to live with mother.

My most recent book, Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, is a story collection, as was my first. Lately people have been asking me about how you decide which stories to include in a collection, and what order they go in, which was (and still is) a big question of mine.

When I was writing the stories that became my first book, Half in Love, I read great collections to see how it was done: Philip Roth’s Goodbye, Columbus; J.D. Salinger’s Nine Stories; Merce Rodereda's My Christina; D.H. Lawrence's England, My England; Hemingway's In Our Time. I wanted to know how the arrangement of eight or ten or twelve stories could create a complete experience that the reader could move through, when the stories weren't linked in any way except for the fact that one writer wrote them, but it was hard to see how I could transfer that information to my own book.

I was taking a class from Ann Patchett then, and she said, about the number of stories in a collection, that Salinger's Nine was like eight hours sleep—a little more was okay, a little less was fine, but it was a good general guideline. About variety, she said that a collection was like a mall: it needed a few big stories with broad horizons, like the big anchor stores, to make a space in which the smaller, quirkier stories could survive.

That made sense, so in putting Half in Love together I took some stories out, and left others in, and set aside two linked ones to start a novel with. I made lists of the titles, and annotated them with codes about what was in each story, some of which were so obscure I can't decipher them now. (One was "adbhj." I have no idea what that means.) The easily breakable codes indicated that the story was in 1st person, or 3rd, or 2nd, and whether the protagonist was male or female, and where the story was set. Then I cut the lists apart and moved the titles around on the kitchen table. I spent a long time trying to keep the first-person stories away from each other, before realizing that I didn't need to, that it wasn't difficult to move from one first-person narrator to another. We're used to hearing different voices telling us things about their lives, and I ended up having four in a row.

I did the same thing for Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, with the annotated titles on cut-up pieces of sticky notes, so they would stay in place—an improvement on the method. Otherwise, the arranging hadn't gotten any easier. I knew which title went first, and had a sense about which one might go last, but I moved the middle around for days, trying different sequences.

I got out Salinger's Nine again, because it struck me as the Platonic ideal of a story collection, and I thought about it as a template, wondering which story was my "DeDaumier Smith's Blue Period," and which was my "Teddy." But that came to seem futile and silly, and I went back to thinking about my own stories.

I put a story set in Connecticut third, after two Montana stories, so it was clear that the collection was going to go to other places. And there were two stories that made sense near each other, but needed to be separated, like quarreling siblings. The story about a man whose daughter has been murdered couldn't go early. It had to go somewhere in the middle, at a point when the reader was already in the book. And it seemed good to have a lighter story after it, about a grandmother who comes back from the dead.

Sometimes the arranging felt like lining up the batting order for a baseball game: which story leads off? And sometimes it felt like seating people at a dinner party: boy-girl-boy-girl if possible, and certain stories shouldn't go next to each other, and try to encourage interesting conversation. And sometimes it felt like making a mix tape for someone you love. But mostly it felt like a puzzle with a discoverable solution, and moving the pieces around was part of the pleasure.

Meloy (Liars and Saints) hits some high notes in these stories of people juggling conflicting emotions with varying shades of success. In "The Children," a man's resolve to leave his wife for his now-grown children's former swimming instructor is unexpectedly "doomed to ambivalence and desire" when he's confronted by the comforting "habit of his marriage." Marital tensions are also at the heart of "O Tannenbaum," in which a couple, while hunting for a Christmas tree with their daughter, pick up a stranded couple whose bickering casts into relief the cracks in their own relationship. Other pieces focus on loneliness, as in the opening story about a young ranch hand's efforts to connect with a lawyer moonlighting as a night-school teacher, or as in "Agustín," where an elderly widower yearns for a lost, illicit lover. Meloy's characters frequently leave each other or let each other down, and it is precisely that-their vulnerabilities, failures and flaws-that make them so wonderful to follow as they vacillate between isolation and connection. Masterfully Eloquent Collection From a Gifted Observer of Human Frailty

This is my first exposure to the work of Maile Meloy, but if my enjoyment of this collection of short stories is any indication, I think I have just found a new favorite author! Speaking literarily, Meloy must be a Hydra or something. How else to explain 11 stories of acutely observed characters, graceful prose and achingly naked insights, each distinctly different in tone and approach?
Each story is a complete reality explored in the most poetic, economic language I've encountered since Truman Capote, plus she possesses a way with regional detail that rivals Carson McCullers. Some stories, like "Spy vs. Spy" will make you laugh out loud, while others, like "Travis B." will blindside you and won't be aware of your eyes tearing up until the words have become too blurry to read. The chilling "The Girlfriend" is like Stephen King if Stephen King could write.
I can't remember when I've enjoyed a book more or been as unhappy to come to the end.

Put Down Everything Else You're Reading And Read This

This one's as solidly stunning as her first collection, Half in Love. Few flashy plot points, zero flashy sentences, but a confidence in the telling so acute that the characters' lives stay with you for a long time. Meloy GETS people, and she gets the West the way few writers do--the comfort and anxiety of slow open spaces, the barreling toward progress and development and peopled places not inconsistent with the ache for untouched land. This is by far the best collection of shorts this year.

I'd like more of the Meloy way please

These stories will make you think as well as tug at your heartstrings. There is something in all of them that goes far beneath the surface of universal human truths. It's funny because the ages of the people range from just out of their teens to their 50's or so, though most are 30 or 40 something's, all of them are relatable however. You can feel for the 20 something farm hand falling for a slightly older woman just as much as you do for the middle aged couple contemplating the state of their marriage and where to go with it. I can't help comparing Meloy's story collection to Elizabeth Strout's short stories "Olive Kittridge". (Strout won the 2009 Pulitzer for fiction). Strout's characters are many different ages but mostly the perspective is looking back through Olive's eyes from somewhere in her 60's. Meloy's folks are looking ahead to what might be, possibilities, Strout's look back and try and make sense of how their past is shaping their present and how it's impacted their current array of choices. Both Meloy and Strout have immense insights and lovely moments of interaction that comes after tension, as if the sun broke through clouds and suddenly there's a realization that life doesn't have to be so complicated. Both authors write beautifully and with few words they create an evocative atmosphere that is their's alone. Last week I finished Meloy's debut story collection `Half in Love' and even in 2003 Meloy had a distinct voice and lots to say. Her work has a sweetness whereas Strout can cast a slightly menacing milieu that makes you dread a little to keep reading. They both have a delicious sense of humor as well though, even through the sadness, Meloy's is a lighter touch.
