This book is a marvelous primer on religion and spirituality. The author Natalie Weaver, takes her reeaders from the birth of the world's major belief systems into the complex realities of 21st century religious thought. Concepts and terms unique to this discipline are not only defined but explained in a concise, applicable format.

Grade 1–4—Much surface and little substance mark this collaboration from Gosline and Bossi—but oh, what a beautiful surface it is. As the rhyming text extols the virtues of trees and describes the planting and growth of a group of seeds, the jewel-toned illustrations of the natural world immediately draw the eye. The elevated language tends more to poetry than sense: "Warm wishes sowed the greening land/and flocking birds rejoiced the stand/and sang a story that uplifts,/the tale of ten trees' simple gifts." The text then introduces these trees, each chosen to represent a particular characteristic (seemingly at random, for the afterword describing the various species gives no hint as to why they were assigned their titles). The blue spruce represents tolerance, the yellow poplar stands for love, and so on. A listing of state trees is appended. This has quickly become my favorite book. THe story almost brings me to tears and the illustrations are wonderful. I want the illustrations for my walls. It is nice to find a book that you can read over and over, but also feels great to give as a gift to everyone on your list. THis is a must have!

Substance, eloquence and utterly magical beauty

This book caught my eye at a pediatric center last year, and I recently succeeded in tracking it down. What an amazing find!

Fist of all the illustration is exquisite, magically emulating the purity and joy inherent in young children. Images are soothing and uplifting, as is the message. The first line in the book, "Everything good begins with me" is a compelling symbol for all that follows. In fact, contrary to what one reviewer wrote, this book is rich with substance and meaning.

What greater message can we hope to instill within our children than "everything good begins with me"? This is the vital yet seldom exemplified, grown-up concept of "accountability", bundled into a simple phrase any child can understand. While the imagery captivates, related messages of courage, hope, honesty, love, and gratitude effortlessly filter into the reader's consciousness.

I'm ecstatic to have discovered this book and to share its beauty and eloquence with my children. In fact I purchased additional copies for friends, family and teachers. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this book. It's one you'll want to treasure and pass on for generations.

Be happy....plant a tree

The opening line is perfect, "Everything good begins with me." A tiny acorn tumbles to the ground and issues this statement to its mother tree. Then his adventure begins. He snuggles deep into a cloak of golden leaves, takes a long winter's nap and emerges in the warm Springtime wide awake, ready to sprout and stand tall amidst his prestigious elders.

Beautiful illustrations of different types of trees appear in the following pages and each one gives an account of his value, worth and contributions to his surrounding world. The trees are characterized by words such as hope, love, courage, gratitude, peace, compassion, tolerance, generosity, honesty, and happiness. They model to the human reader the exact attributes humans need to make their world a more loving and better place to inhabit. The world will then be a thriving and healthy community with everyone and everything living together in harmony and peace and doing their share to make the planet the best it can be.

The book is written in rhyme and the message is positive and inspirational. The illustrations are magical and bring the text alive. The journey from a tiny seed to a luscious, thriving forest encourages us to look after our world so our children can stand in the midst of "life" and know as they grow up they will need to become good stewards of their earth, as one day they will be passing it on to their children's and their children's children.......and so goes forth the circle of life with everyone having a part to play to keep it going.

Kindergarten-Grade 4—Some of these 13 stories have been widely retold, such as "The Crane's Gratitude" from Japan and "Liang and His Magic Brush" from China. Others have variations told in other cultures, such as "How the Sea Became Salty." Most of the selections are six to eight pages in length. Yee's watercolor illustrations add lushness as well as humor in all the right places. The final story, from Thailand, "The Lucky Farmer Becomes King," is the longest in the collection at 15 pages. There is a bit of gore when the farmer's wife kills a bear—she is shown holding a bloody knife, standing over the prone animal. The volume includes a brief glossary, but lacks source notes. About the Author
ROBERT W. WEISBERG, PHD, is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Brain, Behavior, and Cognition Cluster at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A cognitive psychologist, Dr. Weisberg's area of interest is creative thinking, particularly the cognitive processes involved in the intentional production of novelty. He has published papers investigating cognitive mechanisms underlying problem solving, and has published papers and books examining the cognitive processes underlying creative thinking, including Creativity: Genius and Other Myths and Creativity: Beyond the Myth of Genius.

Fascinating and illuminating

This is a wonderful book presenting a thoroughly researched thesis aimed at demystifying creativity. Throughout the book, built on famous case-studies as evidence and rational arguments, the author systematically reviews the different hypotheses explaining common and world-class creativity. The author asserts that creativity, as its core, does not involve exceptional cognitive processes. Rather, it derives from the same type of ordinary thinking we use in everyday life, except that it is applied to specialized areas by individuals who have intimate knowledge and experience in their field, and whose work brings them at the edge (and some creative works are only recognized as such much later). The mental processes are nothing but ordinary. We are all capable of creativity, and there is no qualitative difference between our brains and those of famous creators - whether they are inventors, artists or scientists. In doing so, he reviews the different methodologies, strengths and weaknesses of the existing paradigms explaining creativity. His arguments are compelling, due to the strength of the reasoning, and the particularly insightful examinations of famous acts of creation (already reading the first chapter on the elucidation of the DNA structure and Picasso's Guernica is illuminating). The book is way more serious than all the other ones claiming 'magic' or lateral thinking techniques help develop creativity (for a similar but less scholarly take on creativity, see also 'How to fly a horse'). All in all, it is a very exciting read, delivering a compelling and motivating message. Read this very interesting and important book...

This book is an excellent text to compliment any introductory astronomy text. The review material is concise and well written, and the questions follow the same format and reasoning found in many textbooks. A good buy.

Not a rave

This book is not recommended. Over the years, I have bought many of the Schaum Outlines and found them carefully written and comprehensive - until this one. Right from the beginning it is fraught with sloppy definitions and careless work.

Example from page 31, Chapter 2 "Sky and Telescopes"

Right Ascension (RA) is analogous to longitude. The ecliptic is the plane of the solar system, or the path that the Sun follows in the sky. Because the axis of the earth is tilted, the ecliptic and the celestial equator are not in the same place, but cross at two locations, called the equinoxes.

Comment - the ecliptic and the celestial equator are planes and intersect in a line.

Qne of these locations, the vernal equinox, is used as the zero point of right ascension.

Comment - but which one? The question is important because Right Ascension is measured from the Vernal Equinox

Example from page 33, on Tides

The Earth experiences one full set of tides each day (two highs and two lows), everywhere on the planet. Tides are caused by gravity. The Sun and the Moon both contribute to tides on Earth

Comment - the reader might wonder why there are two highs per day if the phenomenon is due to the rotation of the earth under the moon. Author gives no hint.

There are simply too many errors to be useful to anyone using it to learn the subject. As an adjunct book with problems, fine as long as the reader knows that not everything is correct. Read a real astronomy text and hopefully have a prof and TAs to guide you through the unfathomable.
