May irritate some readers

This book tries to be accessible to a very wide audience. In Australia, where I did my undergraduate studies this could have been read by a beginning first year university student.

The author does not even suppose a prior knowledge of linear algebra.

The result is that the reader will confronted with a swarm of u's v's,w's,x's, y's and so on, rather than more abstract notions of functions. In fact this book looks decidedly 19th century in places. This is the opposite to a book by Serge Lang ,Dieudonné or Rudin. To be fair the author has gone to great lengths to motivate the mathematics and for this reason it may well be very popular with engineers and physicists.

However, in my mind it makes it harder to see the mathematical forest for the trees. On the other hand, if you are prepared to slog though it all you will be able to use this book on its own as a self study book.

In the end I found a book more suited to me for the concepts of forms: V. Arnold's Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics.

Digimon World Official Guide, Good only....

I have had this guide for a few weeks and I like it. The information is correct. (And that's allot more then I can say for *any* Brady Games guide.) Only the charts and maps are rather hard to understand. The Digivolution Chart is *very* confusing. I got so confused trying to understand them that I had to just wing it and hope I got the Digimon I wanted (and or needed). The Digimon Data chart is very nice. Easy to understand and not confusing. My only complaint are the maps and Digivolution chart. Other then that this is a great book with allot of Info. If your stuck in the game buy it. If you want to know all the items buy it. If you just want it to play the game buy it! Its great!

With very small numbers these are very simple operations. But as the problems become more complex we soon reach the limit of our mental capacity. In dealing with difficult problems we must find some means by which the memory is relieved of the strain of computation...Some of our foreign friends seem to consider the Chinese Abacus only as an instrument for addition, or at most for both addition and subtraction. A very few have realized that it is not only capable of solving such addition and subtraction problems but multiplication and division also. In fact, it can be used in performing any and every process in Arithmetic. Though in some places, it is rather inconvenient to use the abacus, especially in operations involving complicated fractions, yet even then it is possible. In other places the processes given in Bead Arithmetic are much simpler. For example, in extracting the square and cube roots of numbers, the process is merely a matter of subtraction."

I have been reading and rereading this book for years.

And actually worn out one previous copy.
During a too long hospital stay years ago someone gave me an abacus. It was a great distraction as I waited between operations and producing my forth child.

I am not good at ordinary math, but "the Fundamentals" have taught me to add and subtract.Even more importantly, I experience numbers and the functions of working with them in a much different way . I love the sensuous experience of working with things that are usually absractions to me.
Perhaps , when I retire I will get nearer the end of the book.

No Diagrams and the Text is Bewildering

Nice attractive little book with that picture of the quaint little Chinese Family with each person working an Abacus. But Inside the Book, well, there are no diagrams, although at times the text seems to refer to diagrams that aren't there. But if you do exactly what it is you think you are being told, well, it all becomes quite a confused mess. you end up going to some youtube video to learn how to use your Abacus.

About the Author

Martin Liebeck is a professor of pure mathematics at Imperial College London. He earned his B.A., M.Sc., and D.Phil. in mathematics from the University of Oxford. Dr. Liebeck has published over 130 research articles and seven books. His research interests encompass algebraic groups, finite simple groups, probabilistic group theory, permutation groups, and algebraic combinatorics.

About the Author

Ed Gilbert is a retired geoscientist, the author of a four-volume series on the history of the U.S. Marine Corps tank units, and has written several numbers in the Osprey Warrior and Battle Orders series.

Catherine Gilbert is a retired speech pathologist and audiologist. Her interest in genealogy led to extensive research into the organization and activities of the militia in the American War of Independence. Ed and Cathy are residents of Texas.

The 1781 Battle of Cowpens, contested deep in the Carolina backcountry, matched the British Legion of the hard-charging Lieutenant Colonel Banatre Tarleton against a mixed Continental and militia force under Colonel Daniel Morgan. The outcome of this close fight triggered a series of events that led eventually to Yorktown. Historians Ed and Catherine Gilbert dissect the battle and the surrounding campaign in this Osprey Campaign Series book.

General Cornwallis wreaked havoc during the British Southern Campaign after the capture of the City of Charlestown and the decisive defeat of a Patriot army under Gates at Camden. British regular and loyalist forces fanned out over the Carolinas, terrorizing the citizenry while suppressing Patriot militia and partisan forces. The arrivals of General Nathaniel Greene and Colonel Daniel Morgan from Washington's Continental Army would bring about the revival of Patriot fortunes. The authors match the opposing commanders and their forces and plans, then lay out the ensuing campaign. The Battle of Cowpens is described in considerable detail despite the relative brevity of this book at under 100 pages. Whether or not the reader buys the authors' premise that Cowpens was the turning point of the American Revolution, it is an exciting battle well worth the study. I saw them there, the shattering words. I saw the letters and their shades. Finally they vanished into the earth. They were buried with him. Justify the judgment, but judge the judgment, too. So begins this extraordinary spiritual journal--a record of the inner life of one of America's most brilliant intellectuals during a year of mourning. When Leon Wieseltier's father died in March 1996, he began to observe the rituals of the traditional year of mourning, going daily to the synagogue to recite the kaddish. Be-tween his prayers and his everyday responsibilities, he sought out ancient, medieval, and modern Jewish texts in pursuit of the kaddish's history and meaning.
And every day he studied, translated, and wrote his own reflections on the obscure texts that he found, punctuating his journal with stories about life in his synagogue and about his family's progress through grief. When his father died in 1996, Wieseltier began to observe the Jewish rituals of the traditional year of mourning, going three times daily to synagogue to recite Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. Between the prayers and his daily work as literary editor of the New Republic, he sought out ancient, medieval and modern Jewish texts in an effort to understand the history and meaning of Kaddish. He discovered that early texts dictated that the mourner's kaddish be recited only on Saturday nights, but the prayers were prolonged so that the souls of the sinners of Israel released from Gehenna would not hurry back to hell. Wieseltier reports that through his study and practice of Kaddish he realized that the past is at the mercy of the present. "The present can condemn the past to oblivion or obscurity," he notes. "Whatever happens to the past will happen to it posthumously. And so the saga of the family is also the saga of the tradition." Wieseltier provides a work of history, philosophy and spiritual memoir where he deals with the meaning of freedom and the perplexity of tradition. His book demonstrates how the practice of religion meets the needs of a troubled soul.

A beautiful journal/journey

This "Gentile reader" (as compared to the 19th century "gentle reader") loved this oh-so-Jewish work. Mr. Wieseltier's book is meditative and beautiful, more like bedside reading (dip in a bit at a time) than a strict narrative. I have read with some bemusement the reviewers here who didn't like it. They seem threatened by an intellectual man who uses his full intellect to consider his faith, or lack of it. Personally, I found this book elegant, engaging, and full of warmth and even occasional humor. My own father is dying, and it helped me ponder his circumstances while thinking about my eventual response to his impending death. Magnificent work.

Brilliant, thoughtful and deeply felt

It's impossible to categorize this book, because it simply doesn't fit into any conventional category. I'll have to explain exactly what it is: a journal kept by the author in the year after his father's death, in which he researches, ruminates, and comments on Judaism. The book is so intense that I got the impression that he spent the entire year (a) saying kaddish and (b) sitting in a tea room poring over ancient manuscripts. It's a privelege to get a chance to peek into the results of an entire year of study -- not to mention the mind of the author, who at times is brilliant. He is not trying to apologize for anything or to prove anything: he is simply, and honestly, thinking. This is not a book to be read in one sitting; I found myself reading a few pages at a time and then thinking about them. But the book is so well-written that I was in no rush to finish.

scholarly, pedantic,even, yet somehow emotional too

I could not wait to read this book. And I could not put it down. I was filled with awe at the scholarship of Jewish people when the rest of Europe was illiterate and uncivilized. I was amazed by the compassionate (and occasionally not so compassionate) views the rabbis had towards mourners and mourning. I learned more than I had thought I could about this odd practice, which Wieseltier made odder still. I agree with all the comments about narcissism, pomposity and the like becuase the author epitomizes those traits and others like them but in my opinion the book transcends its author's limitations and was utterly fascinating in its breadth and depth. As it maddened me at times and lost me in its obscurity at others I was among those who couldn't put it down. By having slogged through this mighty tome, I felt that my kaddish for my own father was enriched.
And in the end, with all the pedantry and scholasticism and weight, the author ends in a spiritual and emotional way.
I imagined him having a relationship with his father in death, through the creation of this book, that he could not have during his father's life. And to that, amen.
