This is by far the most complete and most authoritative translation of the work of Marco Polo (1254-1324). It is based on a manuscript found by Sir Percival David (1892-1964) in the Catedral de Toledo in Spain where it had lain forgotten for 130 years. That manuscript was a copy written in 1795 and was in turn based on a manuscript written in about 1400. The manuscript in Cathedral de Toledo is in Latin. Arthur Christopher Moule (1873-1957) painstakingly transcribed it into type written text. He was so careful to be faithful to the original that he even transcribed meaningless punctuation marks. The Latin text was published as Volume 2 in 1935, even though it was published first. Volume One followed three years later and was published in 1938. A. C. Moule took 17 different versions of the Marco Polo manuscripts. He then combined them into one document by putting into italics those words that are not found in the other versions. Then, on the outside margins and sometimes in the footnotes, he uses a code to show where and in which version the words in italics can be found. He was careful to note the differences. Every word that is different from the words of Ramusio or Yule is put in italics. In addition, there is a chart showing where the page numbers to this work are different from the page numbers of the other translations. Thus, a reader looking at a page of this book can quickly find the equivalent page in the Yule work.

About the Author
Marco Polo (c. 1254 – January 8, 1324) was a merchant from the Venetian Republic who wrote Il Milione or "The Description of the World", which introduced Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned about trading whilst his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, traveled through Asia and met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa; Marco was imprisoned, and dictated his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had 3 children. He died in 1324, and was buried in San Lorenzo. Il Milione was translated, embellished, copied by hand and adapted. This led to Marco's quest, through Acre, into China and to the Mongol court. Marco wrote of his extensive travels throughout Asia on behalf of the Khan, and their eventual return after 15,000 miles (24,140 km) and 24 years of adventures. Their pioneering journey inspired Columbus and others.

A great buy except for one thing

The Bookook of Marco Polo can be read for entertainment, as a historical and geographical source, or as an exercise in literary scholarship. The original has been lost, and no one of the significantly different manuscripts and editions in French, Italo-French, various dialects of Italian, and Latin can be regarded as definitive. In this book Moule and Pelliot have produced a composite translation by comparing eighteen different versions. The result may read a little more clumsily than some of the partial versions, but you don't miss anything.

The first printing of this book has been out of print for decades and I have not seen it on sale for less than $500. There has to be a backstory about how the publisher got the rights to the book; Sam Sloan's foreword is not very helpful on that point and consists mostly of odd bits of personal knowledge.

This is a nice, big, well-made book and a good buy for the price. I deducted one star because the photocopying of the original was badly done and the text is visually very poor. For the common reader with a strong interest in Marco Polo Yule's 19th century version (published by Dover) is probably still the best because of the large number of notes on peripheral topics (e.g., the Venetian navy). However, if accuracy is important, this translation benefits from another century of scholarship, including Pelliot and Moule's own careful work, and is presumably better in that respect. (Hambis's French version, "Le devisement du monde", is based on Moule and Pelliot's work and should also be good.)

For the real Polo buff, Pelliot's intimidating three-volume "Notes on Marco Polo" and Moule's "Quinsai" tell you even more about the Chinese, Persian, Turkish, and Mongol (and even Armenian and Syriac) background of Polo's book.

As the previous reviewer said, the text is indeed visually poor. It seems to have been printed in grayscale, so there is this gray shading between the words. Imagine trying to read something without your glasses - that is what this text is like. Had this been apparent in the preview, I likely would have not purchased the book.

Finally - practical rules for a functional and wardrobe! This book would be a great present for a teenager starting out, or anyone ready to refresh her wardrobe. If only I'd found it years ago; I would have saved thousands of dollars in shops and hundreds of hours of confusion in front of my wardrobe.
This book includes a shopping list for basics pieces and advice on how they should work together, how to build "capsules" of clothing, which well-known stores to visit for different items and even which clothes NEVER to take on holiday. A gem.

I absolutely loved this book! Sally Bradfield is a genius with masterful fashion advice and tips. She obviously must be a natural when it comes to fashion sense to be able to write such a great book. She really does a great job of explaining the nuances that go into a great look. She presents her advice and tips in a formula-like way that anyone can understand. I have already seen a great improvement in my ability to put together outfits in my daily routine. I know it is working because I have been getting compliments like crazy on the things that I've been wearing at work and out with friends. If you're looking for a book to help you become more stylish and understand fashion then I highly recommend you check out this great book and resource. 5 big stars.

I wish I could have had this book years ago it would have saved me so much time, money and aggravation! I love this wonderfully written little gem. I have already started my purge and I cannot believe all the junk I have kept in my wardrobe for sooo long, it is so freeing to let that stuff go. Thank you so much Sally for writing this easily understood and extremely helpful book. Your tips were all fantastic and I will now be looking at every item I purchase so differently than I have in the past…DO I REALLY NEED IT, WHAT DO I HAVE THAT WILL GO WITH IT AND WHAT AM I WILLING TO PURGE TO HAVE IT??? I highly recommend this fantastic book to all women out there young and old, there’s some knowledge for everyone in it.

Very telegraphic

Had the authors developed the line on decoders and how they actually decoded the telegramm, the article would be more interesting. Too much room for explaining how they cheated the Germans to prevent them of knowing how it was decoded and not how they did it. After so many years I think there's no need to cover the codes anymore. Just if you are too interested on the matter.

Two thumbs up both for MBAs and Ph.Ds

It was quite difficult to find a good book on international financial markets/managements. Since it inevitably involves the concepts such as forward/swap, exchange rate risks, interest parity, balance of payments, and so on, a good book needs to have some rigor in clearly explaining important concepts (a good intro for Ph.Ds) and to contain good introduction to how international financial markets work in reality (wonderful reference for MBAs).

I had an opportunity to read an earlier draft of this book when I took International finance course a few years ago taught by Professor Hodrick himself. The draft did a superb job in explaining the theories and international financial markets at the same time. I'm really glad this has been finally published so that other people outside his classrooms have access to these materials. I got hold of this book today and it seems it's been more polished than the draft I had.

I wish the solution manual could come out together, but I heard it's on the way.

Maybe good content but bad printing if you purchase paperback

I bought this book(paperback) for my finance class. I am not sure about the content because I have not finished studying the subject. But the printing quality of the paperback is soooooo bad. It looks like someone has just copied a book with a copy machine. Especially, I can not clearly recognize charts and examples. I don't think this paperback version is worth $157- compared to hardcopy $187. I should have purchased a hardcopy instead of a paperback.

Great for Getting to the Next Level

I've been a pretty basic Excel user since I started taking finance and accounting courses to supplement my math degree. But I've never really needed to do anything besides using the sum function and doing some quick calculations--and honestly, I had no idea how much more there was that Excel could do without getting into VBA coding.

I checked out a few other books, and most of the things I found were either way too basic--teaching you how to use Excel as a calculator and walking you through data entry--or assumes were are already a hard-core power user who needs to dive into VBA. Neither of these really fit me. It walks you through the use and uses for the major functions--with plenty of examples and a ton of downloadable spreadsheets through the companion websites--before moving onto things like arrays (I thought that was just a MatLab thing!), pivot tables, goal seek, and linear and non-linear regressions, before finishing off with some chapters applying it all to finance. I haven't gone through the finance chapters yet, so I can't say that I won't revise my review downward if those chapters aren't as good, but if I do I doubt it will be more than just one star.

My only complaint is that it can be a little light on explanations. I don't always know why something is working the way it is, or why something won't work the I assume it should be. As an example, I was struggling to work through a problem using logical operators with arrays. With a little Googling I found that Excel is very limited handling logical operators with arrays. The book never told me this, and I haven't found a real good explanation as to why this is yet.

I'm using a slightly older version of Excel--2007, and I have only run into a couple things that haven't worked. There are a couple of functions that are in 2013 that are not in 2007, but I have been able to VBA codes online that create that function. Overall, I'm very happy with this and plan on moving on to either Mr Excel's VBA and Macros or Power Programming with VBA.

Thorough and comprehensive

I haven't yet found a question that this guide doesn't resolve. The TOC and Index have been invaluable in quickly locating topics. I thought I knew Excel well (18 years experience in training, assessing and supporting it), but almost from the outset I started learning new tips and tricks. I'm also finding out what I don't know. The book is written in "layman's" terms, and there've been many a Sunday afternoon where I read this for relaxation rather than a novel. If that makes me a nerd, so be it!

just alright

A relatively good book on how to get into Excel, for beginners. The thing with Excel is that, once you get your feet wet, there's no need for books, because every possible question is answered online by others who encountered the same question or challenge before you did. Then again, anything that lowers the initial threshold into this powerful program is a good thing, so three stars.

PIAGET TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO THE ROLE OF BEHAVIOR IN EVOLUTION

Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist known for his epistemological studies with children. His theory of cognitive development and epistemological view are known as "genetic epistemology".

He states in the Introduction to this 1976 book, "My concern, however, is not with behavior's internal mechanisms. That is a question for the ethologists. Rather, I want to evaluate behavior's role within the framework of the general processes of the evolution of life."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"We are forced to conclude that the ultimate aim of behavior is nothing less than the expansion of the habitable---and later, of the knowable---environment."
"Thus, we find ourselves confronted right away by a general problem that will be coming up constantly: the problem of the teleonomy and orientation of behavior."

Piaget examines all the thought on the subject of evolution since Darwin's day. He pinpoints the spots where the various theories do not hold up. This analysis leads him to his own theory. In my view, his theory coincides with my own sense of how change, which is an activist one. In other words, I have something to do with it.
Piaget has his roots in the observation of his own children, and, whereas most of Sciience argues from massive samples, Piaget remains rooted in the significance of individual behavior. Thus his theory itself has moral implications--- if my behavior makes a difference I will be more likely to consider it carefully and act constructively.

Enneagram Fun

The Enneagram is not an easy concept to understand. This is an excellent book to use after one has read something about the basic idea of the Enneagram and you'd like to find your Type number. Of course this is just the start of your Enneagram journey, but this book will help you along your way. It sometimes takes quite a while to determine your true number.

I found this book to be a very quick and easy way to determine what anneagram number you are. The cartoons are very cute. I attended a workshop recently led by Ms. Brady and it was very inspiring. I can't wait to learn more about the anneagram.
